IAOOS main objectives :

Deploy and maintain an integrated system collecting in real time simultaneous observations of the ocean, the sea ice, the snow and the atmosphere in Arctic. 

 

Complement for the satellite observations:

Measurement of the parameters that are little or poorly determined by the satellites. (CNES www.cnes.frNouvelle fenêtre and ESA www.esa.intNouvelle fenêtre)

 

Complement for numerical prevision models and particularly of operational models:

The observations provided by IAOOS will be assimilated into operational models (Mercator www.mercator-ocean.frNouvelle fenêtre, My-Ocean www.myocean.euNouvelle fenêtre, Météo-France http://france.meteofrance.com/Nouvelle fenêtre)

 

Innovation:

The innovative part of IAOOS is to maintain an integrated observing system over the Arctic Ocean to collect simultaneously and in real time the information regarding the state of the superior layers of the ocean, of the lower atmosphere and the sea-ice.

 

IAOOS platform: (see animation)

The platforms will be deployed on the ice floe and in waters free of ice. They will derive following the main currents, mainly the Beaufort Gyre and the Arctic transpolar drift.

. Ocean: vertical profiler between 0 and 1000 meters depth (temperature and salinity). Other parameters can be added (for example biogeochemistry: http://wwz.ifremer.fr/naos/Le-ProjetNouvelle fenêtre ).

. Snow and Ice: thermistance chain (temperature and thickness).

. Atmosphere: Microlidars, Pressurization and temperature captors, Optical Depth Sensors (ODS).

 

 

 

 

 

Strategy: 15 autonomous platforms permanently operational in the Arctic for a 7-year period. 

 
Logistics: 

First, 15 platforms will be deployed, followed by 6 platforms every year.

 
Equipment Equipex:

A total of 40 platforms IAOOS profiling through the ocean, the ice, the snow and the atmosphere.

 

 

Economical valorization:

There are various aspects by which the IAOOS project will create riches:

 

Industrial aspect:

  • The IAOOS platforms will put to contribution French and European industrials for the development of lidars and profilers type ARGO capable to function under ice and water.
  • Partnerships with the CNES and the ESA will valorize the satellite missions, which will benefit from a validation from measurements in situ done by the IAOOS platforms, and to develop/reinforce the coupling between missions.

Social and Economic aspect:

The data will enable amelioration of the climatic prevision models in the arctic polar regions, and thus will have an impact on the economic sectors such as maritime transport, gas and oil exploitation offshore, fishing and risk prevention, …
